Scarlett: I’ve been a writer for the past 20 years, and subjected myself to NaNoWriMo eight times during that period, writing over half a million words. The muscles in my fingers were, understandably, far from grateful.
But, my passion has never been solely in writing. 10 years ago, this led me, my acquired skills, and my passion for helping other authors, down the colourful path of design. Book cover design, to be precise.
This is an industry I’m always stoked to be a part of. Working with so many amazing authors to not just provide them with a professional standard cover (excuse the modesty, but, several of these have won awards!), but also to help in the pre and post publication tribulations that so many writers face, whether that’s helping with editing, formatting, marketing, encouragement during a lull in motivation, or advice on traditional- or self- publishing.
As my work became more popular, I found my services in demand more and more, and have now carefully, but excitably, expanded what began as the Scarlett Rugers Design Agency and is now The Book Design House team to ensure we can keep providing each of the authors we work with, and the readers we try to inspire, with as much value and inspiration as possible.
Why Work With Us?
1. Our designs are awesome!View more of our designs here
2. We’re more than ‘just’ cover design
Everything we do here are The Book Design House is way more than ‘just’ cover design. Everything we do is targeted toward empowering you, as an author, to be the best damn author you can be. We want to work with you to help you achieve that mission of becoming a bestseller, and to have a blast along the journey!
3. We’re on a mission- come join us!
Whether you’re self publishing or being ‘traditionally’ published just doesn’t come into it. We’re on a mission to convince more and more people to accept that both types of publishing are equally professional.
We’ve actually split this mission into three distinct areas that we’re focusing on:
On a one-to-one basis
Whether you’re being traditionally published, or are going the independent route, we want to help you to see that you can become a bestseller.
On a small-market level
We’re encouraging others to provide only the highest quality designs (DIY or purchased) to all authors so that visually, indie authors will be indistinguishable from trad-published authors, leaving judgements to be made on the quality of the writing, not the quality of the cover.
On an industry level
We lead by example, providing the darn best customer service and design experience so that others can follow in our wake to raise the standards in both the traditional and self-publishing realms.
What Are People Saying?
Scarlett’s portfolio is the proof in the pudding! …Scarlett’s covers stand out from the crowd. This cover will help me sell books.
-Chaunce Stanton, author of The Blank Slate Boarding House for Creatives
I was searching to take my books to the next level—and you achieved that beyond my expectations!
– Rachel Schurig, author of Three Girls and a Baby, Three Girls and a Wedding, Three Girls and a Leading Man
I was pleasantly surprised you wanted to read the book in its entirety before starting the design. We went from concept to something tangible to a look that almost completely hit the mark on the first try. The process was very straightforward and I thought the product was top-notch.
